This place was recommended to me by quite a few people while I was visiting nyc. I have to say that it was Actually really pretty good but really was nothing special. It’s a hole in the wall type place not too far from the subway and there are a bunch of knishes to choose from. It’s actually cheaper to take them out vs to dine in so that’s what we did. I think the classic potato was the best but we tried a few of them. This is something that’s hard to make properly in your own kitchen so I’d probably go back

We enjoy this place. A knish is a potato dish about the size of a brisket. Fillings include kasha, red cabbage, broccoli, along with potatoes. With a dessert kinish, this makes a great and inexpensive meal.

Another place I really wanted to like, but didn’t. It’s a knish bakery, so why do you microwave the knishes? Cold in the center, too hot outside, just like you expect from a microwave. Also, I had the worst egg cream ever made. How is that possible?

I don't see what the fuss is about. Apart from the atmosphere of the place maybe. Food or service deserve no stars. Jewish food can be so much tastier han that.

THE authority on knishes. A crazy variety of the classics - potato, kasha, mushroom, spinach, cabbage, sweet potato or the garlic and onion. They also have sweet cheese variety’s with apple, cherry, blueberry or chocolate. It’s been around forever and a New York institution. Day or night this place is always the spot. Long live Schimmel’s!

Best knishes in NY (objectively), potato and cheese. We, as tourists, specifically took the Metro to get out there because it was specifically mentioned as an example of the best knishes in the world. Really tasty, decently priced, near other delis to pick up other delicacies too.

It’s fallen into disrepair and neglect. I’m not sure what all the buzz was about. I got the hole in the wall part. More than used to it in Asia. But sticky tables gross utensils were a bit more than I bargained for. One guy handling customers, payment, bussing tables seemed a bit much. Also maybe they are amazing fresh out of the oven but microwaved? Taste was meh. The puff pastry needs to be baked to retain flakiness. And the grossness ended up upsetting my tummy.

Found it by accident, and enjoyed my very first knish. Will definitely try again when in NYC. Try the potato knish and blueberry cheese pastry thing is amazing. From what I read, folklore says no politician in NYC has won an election without eating here! ;)

Great knishes! The cheese ones are sweeter, and better, than the more savory potato knishes, which are also excellent.

This is literally a journey back in time to old Lower East Side Manhattan. The owners kept most things almost as they used to be since the beginning. For me, any business serving food for more than a year is good, more than 5 years is really good, and more than a decade is a miracle. This place has been in business since 1910. Now that's impressive! Once you go in you feel like you traveled through time to the good old days of NYC. Pictures and news clips from decades ago. But the real treat us the knishes themselves. Oh man I can indulge in them forever. I tried most of the flavors over the years and none of them every disappointed. The fact the place was visited and is favored by the likes of Barbara Streisand, Woody Allen, Larry David and more, must be doing something right. If you've never been, this place is a must!P.S. this is the original knish. Everything else is cheap imitation.

Get Knishes in this East Village landmark. You will not be disappointed. It brought me back to my childhood in the Catskills waiting for Ruby The Knish Man to roll up the bungalow colony driveway.

The food here is outstanding. Very quaint old restaurant, that has been there since the 1920s. Wide variety of Knishes and other Ethic foods. Great to pop in for a quick snack or a full meal. They also serve authentic Lime Rickies. Everything is Kosher and prepared with love and care and you can taste it.

Service was absolutely awful. Big disappointment since our Jewish family from Toronto was excited to get to the lower east side for some authentic Jewish home food. Tried to order at the counter for takeout and was told could not. Sat at a table and couldn’t get any attention other than rude and snarky “it’s a little bit busy” quipping passing by of servers. Finally got one of the servers’ attention who in an irritated voice said we were supposed to order at the counter for takeout. Rude. Rude. Rude. But the young 20-something servers had all the time in the world for the two young ladies all dressed up at the table behind us.

I initially came in in a bad mood with someone, and you know how when you're in a bad mood everything is terrible? Well I tried this, and even with my terrible awful mood I could not for the life of me find anything to complain about. The opposite; in fact. It was so absolutely delicious I couldn't help but eat every bite with a huge smile on my face. Thanks for taking away my bad mood and making me a happier person today. This is what I imagine life must have been like decades ago. I mean, I lived decades ago LOL but not in NYC and I was just a child.... but if I were an adult in NYC in the 1960s, I could see me stopping here on the way home from work two or three nights a week :-) The two of us sampled a total of four items and we loved everything. Very happy :-)

The original Knishery! It’s a must of the Lower East Side. Small and unassuming but delivers on flavor. It’s a family tradition since 1910! Let’s you step back in time. I’d highly suggest a pop in!

Other than the deliciously prepared variety of Knishes, this place is definitely worth a visit. Nostalgic and historic is what you feel as soon as you walk through the doors. Visitors looking for a truly historic Jewish New Yorker experience will find it here. Knishes taste fresh and are prepared by the hour. Plenty of seating and great to go with friends.

Amazing knishes and the latkes came out hot and sizzling straight from the oil (not reheated in an oven to lukewarm, like Ben's in midtown). Place is small and they are a stop for walking tours in the neighborhood, so it isn't unusual to find them out of a few things listed on the menu. Stuff is made fresh, every day. I'd rather that they run out than have too much would would either be used the next day, or thrown away (which would raise the prices).

Tasty knishes served in a very historic looking restaurant. While I felt the spinach and potato lacked seasoning, after tasting other knishes in the city, I realized that is normal for this product. The mustard went a long way for the potato one.

This is a teeny tiny shop that has been around since 1910. What do they make? Only the finest traditional knish is a wicked amount of sweet and savoury flavours. Sit in one of the rickety chairs and have it warm or if you are lucky enough to live near take a mess of them home. The place is loaded with photos and steeped in history. This is a walk backwards in time. Truly such a gift it is still here. Please follow @joannasable on instagram for more food and travel fun.

I now know the wonders of the knish. I'm especially partial to the cherry & cheese. The man behind the counter was so kind. He said he was sorry - kugle and soups are now only on the weekends. He's sent me to B&H Dairy for matzoh ball soup. How can I refuse? What a special place. I'm so glad I made the effort to go today. The dumbwaiter lifts trays from the basement kitchen to the shop. The knish case shows it's age (1910) in a way that endears. Look up for architectural details. The special when I was there was pumpkin raisin, by the way. "You don't have to be Jewish to eat a knish." Street level entry to the basement kitchen. I'm a fan!

This is considered not only an NYC classic, Manhattan Classic, Lower East Side Classic, not only a tri state area classic, but people come from all over the country, no let me rephrase, the WORLD to come to this world famous classic family owned knish restaurant. This has been a staple and has been holding it down in the same tenament of the lowereast side for over 70 years and past down from generation to generation. Fine classic example of small business coming up and making it in America.

So glad they were still open in this COVID19 crisis smh 🤦🏻‍♀️ but they just a made a loyal customer! It cost 4.50 for one a bit much but when I saw how much it took to make these and that taste was incredible they are definitely worth it! Can’t wait to go back
